CHAIR ON FIRE WRITING CHALLENGE

George squinted his tired eyes as he scrolled through the endless job listings, trying to find any opportunity that could get him the money he needed and fast.

“$800 dollars. Two days,” he repeated to himself, as he shifted frantically between tabs in the browser from LinkedIn to InDeed to Glass Door.

Most listings did not seem to have any offer that fit into his rapidly shrinking timeline, especially one that paid the amount of money he needed. George took a sip of the last part of his cold and grainy coffee. It was bitter, just like he would be if he could not get the money.

All his classmates and closest friends were going on the Euro Trip, especially someone who he would like to get a little closer to, sweet Suzie Bellflower. She smelled like a flower too. And any time she so much as looked in his direction or said a word to George, his heart rang like a bell.

If he could go on this trip, he would even get to be on a plane with Suzie for hours, stay at the same hotel, and maybe even explore Europe together! Sure all his friends would be there, but George couldn’t think of a more romantic opportunity.

There was just one problem. He was $800 short of the $2000 cost of the trip. He only had scrounged up $1200 dollars, which would leave him near penniless when he returned home, but it would be worth it if he could get some one-on-one time with Suzie.

He scrolled and scrolled, but no job offer came even close to being able to get him the money he needed in the time he needed it. Slowly, the browser tabs began to close as he reached the end of each query, applying for just a few possible opportunities after days of searching. Then, he saw it.

“Specialty Food Taster Wanted! $1000 cash payment upon completion of just a 1 hour shift.”

George rubbed his eyes, then read the listing carefully again?

$1000 for a one hour shift, and just to taste some food?

Sure enough, that is exactly what it said. He could barely take his eyes off of the listing as he pulled out his phone to dial the number written big and bold…
